Supremely rare and important carved wood Arts & Crafts bowl,
probably designed by the architect & garden designer and Voysey/Gimson contemporary, Robert Weir Schultz (1860- 1951).

Profusely carved and pierced throughout with various plants, foliage, field mice etc with interspersed columnar carvings.
Carved legend to the rim that reads: "How many things by season season'd are to their right praise and true perfection"

Incised to base by the master carver Joseph Armitage (JA) for Robert Weir Schultz (RWS) and dated for 1907

Joseph Armitage (1880-1945); famous and highly regarded sculptor and carver and member of the Art Workers Guild.
Possibly a gift or commissioned piece.

Approx 13.5" diameter.

The bowl is illustrated in an archive image (see last image) of one of the interior images of The Barn in Hartley Wintney, Surrey, where Robert Weir Schultz lived.
The image was part of a lot sold by Law Fine Art in 2005, as part of the Andrew Keith Collection (RW Schultz was his great uncle);
a leather bound photograph album recording the property.
The same image is also illustrated in the new lavish book on Gimson; pl 210 page 226.
The bowl can be clearly seen in the image foreground on top of the table. The bowl was not included in the aforementioned sale.
