Important Peter Waals Gimson desk

SOLD

Code: 10939

A large and superb Cotswold School oak desk with plan chest type drawers by the Cotswold craftsman, Peter Waals.

May have probably been made for his own use or possibly Ernest Gimson's use.

Approx 81" wide, 33" depth and 31.5" high

Superb Provenance:

The provenance of this desk can be traced back to the auction of Arthur Mitchell’s effects at Glenfall House, Cheltenham in 1965.

Arthur Mitchell was a major patron of a number of Cotswold School architects, as wel as builders and makers.
His fortune stems from the brewing industry, where he was both Chairman and later President of his family’s business, Mitchells and Butlers of Birmingham.
Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum hold a number of pieces of furniture that were originally made for him by Peter Waals at Chalford, as well as other pieces designed by Ernest Gimson that Mitchell bought from the original owners.
