Irish Arts & Crafts Celtic Youghal large copper framed mirror

POA

Code: 10827

A fabulous and rare example of a large very well patinated copper framed mirror of shaped rectagular form
by the Youghal Art Metal Workers of Ireland.
Superb Celtic and other typical stylised zoomorphic repousse designs to frame.
Stamped marks to base; c1905.

Approx 31.5" by 23.95" overall.
Replaced mirror plate.

The Youghal Art Metal Workers were based in Cork, Ireland. Started in April 1904 by the local branch of the Gaelic League.
Indeed there was a
tradition of coppersmithing for the dockyard.
In 1904, a Keswick School of Industrial Arts metalworkers, Thomas Spark went to the Youghal Works to run & pass on his specialist skills.
He had previously given demonstrations in art metal working at the Cork Exhibition of 1902.

One of their best pieces (still in situ), a very large circular mirror was made for the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1904.
