Richard Riemerschmid music armchair

SOLD

Code: 10726

A rare Arts & Crafts/Art Nouveau “Music Room” armchair designed by the celebrated German architect, painter, designer and city planner, Richard Riemerschmid (1868-1957); c1899.
Riemerschmid originally designed the most iconic and best known “Music Room” chair, first shown at the 1899 Dresden Art Exhibition; its armless form allowing the freedom of movement for the musicians. This fine example is the armchair version made and exhibited at the same time. Liberty & Co subsequently made their own versions of the “ Music Room” chairs which they retailed and also used in their basement café.
SOLD TO A PRIVATE COLLECTION
The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York hold an example of each of the single chair and armchair (latter ref. 263.1979) in their collections; see: http://www.moma.org/collection/object.php?object_id=3126
