John Hassall was a painter, illustrator and poster designer, the latter for which he remains best known. He studied art at the Slade School under Alphonse Legros. His Jolly Fisherman poster, “Skegness is So Bracing” has become one of the icons of 20thC poster work. The nursery friezes he (and indeed Cecil Aldin) produced for Liberty & Co c1900 were intended as panels to be inset into childrens nurseries. Original designs (rarely survive now) would have been applied directly to the nursery walls.
