Shapland & Petter Art Nouveau wall cabinet

SOLD

Code: 10436

Rare Shapland & Petter oak wall cabinet with stylized Art Nouveau copper floral hinges and Pre-Raphaelite style ceramic tile panel by J&W Wade (Flaxman Tile Works), attributed (in the Shapland & Petter book p83) to Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale, after her watercolour entitled “Chance”, an illustration of which appeared in the Studio Vol 23, 1901. However in that watercolour, the profile of the maidens head is a mirror image of the one in the tile, aside from other obvious differences and this tile is more similar, if anything, to John William Waterhouses later, “The Soul of the Rose”. Flaxman Tile Works did indeed produce a companion portrait tile, which in actual fact corresponds to Eleanor Fortescue Brickdales “Chance”; See “Fired Earth – 1000 Years of Tiles in Europe” p129. h: 21” d: 9” w: 30.5” at top.
