Glasgow Style GM Ellwood armchair
Stunning and elegantly designed sculptural Glasgow Style inlaid mahogany armchair, design attributed to GM Ellwood (who later was the chief designer for JS Henry).
Retailers label for PE Gane of Bristol to underside of chair (formerly Trapnell & Gane for whom Ellwood designed); c1900. Striking arrowhead design inlay of pewter to shaped back with green stained inlay within. The overall shaped back reminiscent of Herbert McNair designs. Illustrated in The Studio Yearbook of 1906 p31, in an interior shot of a room design by the Scottish architect John Nisbet (1868-1951), who also studied at the Glasgow School of Art.
Approx 49 high, 22 widest and 20 projection. Height to seat approx 18".
