An extremely rare oak “ Shakespeare” armchair, designed by EW Godwin (1833-1886) and made by William Watt, c1881, with inset semi-recessed original castors to the front legs.
There were many variants to this chair, made by the likes of Liberty & Co and many others, but this is one of the true originals. It was part of a suite of Elizabethan-Revival furniture that Godwin designed for William Watt entitled "The Shakespeare Dining Room Set”. It included eight small chairs, one stool, two armchairs, a sideboard and a table, and was illustrated at the time in “ Building News” fig. 176.1; 11 November 1881.
One of only three currently known in existence; the other two, one in a private collection and the other in a National Trust house.
