C R Ashbee Magpie & Stump handles

SOLD

Code: 10107

An extremely rare set of four (two L-shaped and two rectangular) original Arts & Crafts patinated copper & brass door handles on backplates;
designed (and used) by Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942)/ Guild of Handicraft
for his Cheyne Walk, London house, “The Magpie & Stump”; c1893-4.

The house had been built on the site of a 16th C Inn by the name of the Magpie & Stump;
The inn was burnt down in 1886 and Ashbee designed and built his family home there,
and also incorporated offices and his personal studio for the Guild & School of Handicraft.

The house was eventually demolished in 1969 but prior to that,
members of the Ashbee family along with the V&A Museum in London retrieved and saved many items.

Most of these are now in the collection of the V&A.
The Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum has some of the leatherwork panels
and some remained in private family hands; from which this set originally came.
