Shapland & Petter Baille Scott bookcase
A rare and stunning arts and crafts/art nouveau inlaid mahogany free standing or wall hanging (can be both) bookcase by Shapland & Petter of Barnstable (fully stamped and marked) after a design by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott in the Scottish Style circa 1900. Beautiful chevron inlay to front and also square cut-outs to top sides and stunning inlaid panel to front. Approx 20" wide and 32" high. The similar oak version of this (slightly different front configuration - also by Shapland & Petter) is illustrated in the Truth Beauty and Design catalogue by Fischer Fine Art, 1986, page 67). Also see The Antique Trader selling exhibition catalogue of April 1998, page 6. The oak version is also sometimes attributed to the manufacturer JP White of Bedford, based on the similar inlaid panels of a settle Baillie Scott designed for them and Wylie & Lochhead of Glasgow.
