Superb Arts & Crafts settle, by William Birch of High Wycombe for Liberty & Co, to a George Walton attributed design. Beautifully turned upright supports with two drop in rush seats (re-rushed to a very high standard), the base joined by stylish curved X-stretchers. Curved back splats with typical George Walton style squashed heart cut-outs. A very comfortable and sturdy settle!
Approx 51" wide, 45.5" highest and 23" deep.
William Birch produced two versions of these settles - as shown and a similar one but with Glasgow Style square shaped piercings.
See illustration page 244 in the recently published book on Arts & Crafts Furniture by John Andrews. A similar example was exhibited and sold at the Liberty Arts & Crafts Exhibition June 2006 exh 50 page 29.
Also a similar version (with square cut-outs) was exhibited and sold at the Liberty 2004 selling exhibition.
