Arts & Crafts copper picture frame housing an original colour print after Maurice William Greiffenhagen (1862-1931), entitled “An Idyll” (in relief to the copper frame); depicting a young man dressed as a shepherd embracing a yielding maid on a slope of pastureland; c1900.
Greiffenhagen was, amongst other positions held, Professor of Painting at the Glasgow School of Art between 1906 and 1926.

The original oil painting was completed in 1891 and hangs at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Apparently it was one of DH Lawrences favourite pictures, as to him, it visualised the word “passion” and was discussed at length in his novel “The White Peacock”.
Probably retailed through Liberty & Co at the time.
