Rossetti frame with pencil drawing

Rossetti frame with pencil drawing

Code: 10257

SOLD

Unusual and highly decorative good quality early 20th mahogany "Rossetti" frame with a Walter Crane style silk & needlework border panel mount of cherubs, acanthus and mythical beasts.
Housing an original fine pencil drawing (or possibly silverpoint) after Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). The frame is stamped "Rossetti" to lower front but the drawing apparently is not by him. It may be that it originally housed a drawing by Rossetti, and later in the early 20thC replaced by a similar original drawing by one of his followers, possibly Karl Parsons, the stained glass artist.
Several old labels to back (which looks untouched); some for depositories with a Lord Ballard`s name and also the framers Harnel & Son (dating the possible reframing to c1915-1918).
Approx  32" wide by 29" high overall.
