A sumptuous late Victorian Pre-Raphaelite style silk work and watercolour embroidery depicting Emelye, from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales; c1899

With text from said publication (The Knight's Tale).

Embroidered by Beatrice Carlile - daughter of Sir Edward Hildred Carlile 1st Baronet.

Approx 18" by 8"

The lovely provenance, by family repute (from whence this came):

"This embroidered picture has been in the family since the time when my Great Uncle Thomas Brooke (born 16 November 1875, died 1 Apr 1954), my grandmother Gertrude's elder brother, married Beatrice.
So it is an heirloom passed down the family through my mother's side. They married 13 Jun 1904.

She was born 4 June 1882 Beatrice Gundreda Carlile and was daughter to Sir Edward Hildred Carlile, businessman and Conservative politician.
The two families were in the mill trade close to each other in West Yorkshire; the Carliles in mainly cotton thread at Meltham Mills, the Brookes mainly in wool at Armitage Bridge"
