Another (2nd one in some 20 years!) superb original Morris & Co oak framed lithographic print after Sir Edward Burne Jones’
famous tapestry “The Attainment; Vision of the Holy Grail to Sir Galahad, Sir Bors and Sir Percival”; c1890’s.
Stamped twice "Morris & Co 449 Oxford St W” and once “931” to back of frame.
The Holy Grail tapestries were possibly William Morris’ greatest achievement as both designer and manufacturer.
This image was the culminating panel from originally, a series of six tapestries depicting the
Arthurian legend in search of the Holy Grail. They were designed and made for the dining hall in
Stanmore Hall, Middlesex; a commission from the wealthy Australian mining engineer, William Knox D’Arcy.
The photographic cartoon for the tapestry is in the collection of the William Morris Gallery in London.
Approx 12” by 34” inc the original quartersawn oak frame.
Apologies for the reflections in some images!
