Code: 11413
Exquisite & rare very large Arts & Crafts needlework embroidery hanging, depicting Adam & Eve and the Garden of Eden; c1890~1910
Very much in the manner of Morris & Co; possibly Austrian Secessionist or German.
Approx 7ft 6" by 5ft
A most unusual and beautifully executed piece, exhibiting a few different historical and geographical influences; English, Continental, African, Byzantine & Greek!
Curiously, there is no serpent (implying not a religious piece?) and the apple tree is replaced by what looks like a pineapple.
Old Greek lettering loosely translated as follows......
(God) told them to leave (paradise) -and go to the Earth
Expelled them from Paradise and sent them to the Earth
That is on top segment.
Love never falls/fails (across the banner).
Basically they were evicted from Paradise; they are the fallen ones although love never falls/fails.
