Rare and important Arthur Simpson of Kendal Arts & Crafts chair

Code: 10209

POA
An extremely rare & truly elegantly designed occasional or hall, Arts & Crafts chair in oak & leather,
by Arthur Simpson of Kendal (1857-1922), c1900.

In our humble opinion, one of the best & most beautiful of all chairs he ever designed & made.

An exceptional piece; probably a one-off

Original floral design embossed leather to seat and back;
most probably executed by his wife Jane Davidson, an accomplished leather worker and embroideress in her own right.

Unusual angled seat back arrangement very much in the manner of a chair designed by his friend and colleague, CFA Voysey,
which the latter exhibited in the British Section at the International Exhibition in Turin, 1902 .
Pierced heart cut-out to base section of seat back and shaped chamfered stretcher to base.
Inked/stencilled shape number to underside.

One of the best examples of any furniture by Arthur Simpson that we have handled & seen!

Examples of his carving/work are in Blackwell, the famous Arts & Crafts house in the Lake District designed by MH Baillie Scott.
And of course Arthur Simpson was also very highly regarded by the British architect CFA Voysey,
who commissioned Simpson to make pieces to his designs.
