A simply stunning and superb, rare Arts & Crafts oak wardrobe attributed to Charles Robert Ashbees's Guild of Handicraft; c1895.
With the most exquisite heavy duty but finely hand forged beautifully chamfered muscular metalwork hinges and handles, coupled with a splendid patinated copper repousse panel of two opposing peacocks and the famous motto "Fine feathers Make Fine Birds".
A precursor no doubt to Ambrose Heal's later "Fine Feathers" range of furniture. Some of the craftsmen/cabinetmakers at the Guild did later go over to work for Heals.
